Martin Ellis – Founder
“From the Roadside to the Bedside.”
My journey into Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) didn’t begin in a lecture hall; it began in the back of an ambulance.
As a Critical Care Paramedic, I spent time managing patients at the very edge of physiology and learning from my mentors in the field at every corner. It was in those high-pressure moments that I developed a profound respect for the complexity of advanced life support and recognized the life-saving potential of ECMO for patients who had exhausted conventional therapy.
That passion for “doing more” for the dying patient drove me to further my studies in Medicine. I realized that to be a true advocate for this therapy, I needed to master not just the mechanics of the machine, but the deep physiology of the patient attached to it.
Today, as a dedicated faculty member of the ECMO Society of South Africa (ECMO SA), I have developed a deep-rooted passion for education and training and empowering others to do what I am so passionate about with the help of my esteemed colleagues and mentors. My goal is not only to share the knowledge that I have, but also to learn from the experiences of each and every one of my attendees.
I founded ETA Medical with a simple but urgent goal: To take the training to the people.
Too often, high-quality specialist training is locked away in major city centers, inaccessible to the dedicated practitioners working in vital regional hospitals. I established this academy to bridge that gap—bringing quality high-fidelity simulation training, equipment, and expertise directly to the clinicians who need it most.
Whether you are in Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, or beyond, my promise is to provide you with training that is rigorous, realistic, and deeply relevant to the work you do.

About ETA Medical

Our Mission
To decentralize critical care education in South Africa by delivering high-fidelity, hands-on ECMO training to healthcare practitioners beyond the traditional metropolitan hubs. We exist to ensure that geography is never a barrier to clinical excellence.

Our Vision
We envision a future where every critically ill patient in South Africa—regardless of their location—has access to a clinical team that is confident, competent, and proficient in Extracorporeal Life Support.

Our Values
• Access without Compromise: We believe that “rural” or “regional” should never mean “lower standard.” We bring the same equipment, the same simulators, and the same high standards to every workshop we run.
• Clinical Precision: In ECMO, the difference between life and death is often measured in millimeters and seconds. We teach with rigorous attention to detail.
• Deep Passion: We don’t just teach the curriculum; we share a vocational calling to save lives.
• Community: We are building a network of support, linking isolated practitioners to the broader national critical care fraternity.
